- Sand, clay, and peat are all exposed in the course of excavation for the Wallkill Floodplain Bench project. This is 'Phase 4' South, just upstream of the County Route 1 bridge over the Wallkill, August, 2023.

The District was created in 1966 by a resolution from the County Legislature, with a mission to protect the natural resources of Orange County, particularly our soil and water. Originally, almost all of the District's work was with the agricultural community. As the county has grown and the landscape has changed over the years, our services have expanded and we now provide conservation assistance to municipalities and landowners as well as farmers.

Our Next Board Meeting is: Monday April 20th, 2026 at 9:00 AM Eastern Time (US and Canada) at our office located at 225 Dolson Avenue, Suite 103, Middletown, NY 10940. The first draft of the April meeting agenda will be posted on 4/10/26.

The District is excited to announce that we will be supporting Orange County's Northern Academy, who are based in Middletown, as they compete in the Hudson Valley Regional & State Envirothon. The Regional Envirothon will take place on Friday, April 17th at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, NY from 7:30 AM - 2:00 PM. Click here for more information pertaining to the Westchester County Regional Envirothon. Additionally, the 2026 NYS Envirothon will be held on May 27th & 28th at SUNY Cortland.
