Orange County Soil and Water Conservation District, in partnership with NYS DEC's Trees for Tribs program, planted 200 trees and shrubs along the banks of the Monhagen Brook off Route 78 in Middletown, NY on September 26th, 2015. The Monhagen Brook is listed as an urban runoff impaired waterbody according to a study by the DEC. Riparian buffers, or streamside plantings, such as these help to filter polluted runoff, create wildlife habitat, prevent erosion, provide nutrients to aquatic life, and many more ecological services.
We will be hosting another volunteer tree planting at the same site on Saturday, October 24th from 9am to 1pm. Please come out and help us restore the health of our local streams. Event flyer is below.
